Mechanical Response of CNT/2024Al Composite to Compression and Tension at Different Strain Rates

Compressive and tensile properties of a carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced 2024Al composite are investigated under quasi-static dynamic compression as well tension, along three different directions (extrusion, normal transverse directions). Upon compression, yield fracture strengths the show negligible strain rate effect mechanical anisotropy manifested in compressive stress–strain curves. Fractography profilometry that surfaces rough shear planes for compression; however, smooth conical observed result more homogeneous damage nucleation growth, leading to high ductility loading. Pronounced is Ductility or highest direction, because debonding particle lamellar interfaces suppressed this direction. In situ optical imaging with digital image correlation utilized obtain deformation dynamics directions.
